Villa made with retired’s life savings, threatened of demolition

A British couple who retired to Spain expected to enjoy a quiet, stress-free life in the sunshine.

But Captain Ivor Pringle, 61, and his wife Judi’s idyll was shattered when they received a letter from the regional Spanish government – delivered by the police –  saying their dream home must be demolished.

They were told the home they purchased with their life savings in 2001 didn’t have the correct planning permission.

The news came as a complete shock to the couple who had been living in their home for eight years before being told it was illegal.

‘To me it seems against human rights, people can’t knock homes down just like that, this is our retirement home, our life,’ Judi said as they share their story on the latest episode of Channel 5’s Britain’s Horror Homes.

The couple had decided to leave their life in Basingstoke behind to start a new life in sunny Spain after Ivor took early retirement following 32 years service with the Parachute Regiment.
